Buddhism for Yogis

An Introduction to its basic philosophy and practices

In today’s yoga scenewe draw from many different traditions; some of uis practice Asana based Yoga, but are also attracted to Buddhist meditations such as Vipassana, Mindfulness or Loving Kindness meditation. I have created this course for you to learn more about the psychological and underpinnings of Buddhist practice:

When Yoga developed on the Indian subcontinent, this was within a flourishing spiritual milieu where different traditions like Buddhism, Jainism and Brahmanism mutually influenced and challenged each other: sometimes the traditions were in agreement, sometimes in sharp argumentation. During this course we will look at the common key points of Buddhist and Hindu Yoga, found in the early Patanjali and Buddhist teachings as well as in the later tantric tradition. What concepts and practices do they share and what distinguishes one tradition from other? We will look at how both traditions relate to physical asana and what the aims of this practice might be.

Themes to be covered are:
1. Who was the Buddha? – the historical Buddha, his core teachings and the psychology of suffering
2. The Buddha and Patanjali- same or different? – two paths to overcoming the crisis of existence
