Buddhism and Inner Happiness

A course in Buddhist Philosophical Practice

In this course we’ll investigate how Buddhism teaches a path towards greater joy, contentment and inner peace. In this context Buddhism takes an unexpected turn declaring that the key to fulfilment lies in caring for others’ happiness – rather than our own.

We will, during the course, look at the deeper philosophical underpinnings of the Buddhist view and also how it can be understood from a contemporary viewpoint based on neuroscience and  psychology. From this perspective we will look at three factors connected with happiness:

  • A sense of connection
  • A sense of purpose
  • An ability to monitor thoughts and emotion
Curriculum: We will look at traditional Buddhist texts to deepen our understanding of what happiness is. We will learn how happiness is defined and how we can act in order to cultivate happiness for ourselves and others. We will then look how we express our highest aspirations and the role of  commitment in daily practice. We will study the Buddhist science of the mind and explore practices that are undertaken to train the mind and bring out our higher human potential

Key Topics:
•The Buddhist view on happiness and fulfilment.
•The importance of caring for others’ happiness.
•Practices like loving-kindness and compassion meditation.
•Insights from neuroscience and psychology on meditation and mindfulness.

By the end of this course, you will gain a nuanced understanding of happiness and its relationship to purpose, become familiar with key Buddhist practices, understand the philosophical foundations of Buddhist mind training, and relate these practices to contemporary scientific findings. This knowledge will equip you with practical tools to cultivate greater joy and fulfilment in your own life.
