Journey with us into Kathmandu Valley, and discover the holy landscape that cradles the origins of the practice of Yoga. This retreat brings together the traditional daily practice of Ashtanga Yoga, with Buddhist and Hindu teachings, and spectacular cultural sites, in the land and culture that helped to write the biography of the Yoga we know and practice today. The Kathmandu Valley natives have practiced Yoga and Tantra for hundreds of years, integrating these practices into their daily lives, and the valley itself is a mandala of sacred sites: monasteries, meditation caves, temples and stupas. Several of these are on UNESCO's world heritage list and being present in these spaces is transformative and deeply moving.
If you feel called, then join us for what will be a deeply transformative journey. We will experience life and practice Yoga in a Tibetan monastery, and visit the medieval city of Patan. We will trek through otherworldly landscapes at the foot of the Himalaya, and visit the holiest Buddhist and Hindu sites including Boudhanath, Namo Buddha and Pashupatinath.
You will also be able to deepen your Yoga practice with Ellen Johannesen, who has become a local in Nepal, has over 20 years of experience teaching and practicing Ashtanga Yoga, and has a Masters Degree in Buddhist studies.
Nepal has a lot to offer whether you want to go trekking, or visit its many world-heritage sites. I have therefore put together a Yoga journey that takes you to the most amazing places around the kathmandu valley and brings you into its spiritual heart: Just imagine living in a stunning Tibetan Buddhist monastery, an ancient Newari farm house set in beautiful nature. Imagine waking up in the medieval city of Patan, or the lively Tibetan area, Boudhanath. All the while, you will have daily yoga classes, meditation sessions and philosophical talks, which will provide insight into the vibrant culture of the valley. All together this gives you an excellent opportunity to deepen your your understanding of Yoga and to enhance your Ashtanga practice!

This is a unique chance to meet Ellen Johannesen, a KPJAYI level 2 authorized Ashtangi living in Nepal, and study Yoga, Buddhism and meditation with her. Ellen, who owns a Master Degree in Tibetan Buddhism and Himalayan Languages, will share with us the central ideas of Buddhism and introduce us to some of the life-changing meditation techniques practiced by the yogis of the Himalayas. This is also the chance to experience living in a Tibetan Buddhist monastery in Nepal and visit sacred sites around the Kathmandu valley!
The days start with yoga, where Ellen teaches Ashtanga in her characteristic way: supplying the serene Counted Vinyasa method with her playful approach to movement - inspired by dance and functional anatomy. With more than 20 years of teaching experience and a background as a professional dancer, Ellen is an extremely skillful Ashtanga practitioner and teacher, from whom you guaranteed will pick up some new moves! Except for the first day the morning practice will be Mysore- style self practice but depending on the level and size of the group, we might split you into two batches.
In the afternoon the classes will alternate between Ashtanga technique and Buddhist philosophy and meditation. We will delve deeper into the physical and mental aspects of practicing Ashtanga and look at how it prepares us for the higher limbs of yoga. We will also learn the philosophical foundation for meditation that makes possible the transformation of the mind. This we will put this into practice during meditation sessions. Our aim will be to approach all aspects of yoga as a sadhana practice that can bring depth, a sense of purpose and joy into our lives!
